Vaping and E
Electronic cigarettes (E-Cigarettes) are battery-powered devices that function by heating a liquid into an aerosol that is inhaled by the user. The liquid solution can contain nicotine, flavorings, harmful chemicals, or other substances.
Because the brain experiences significant development during adolescence, nicotine use during this critical time can rewire the brain which can make it easier for youth to get addicted to other substances due to issues with impulse control.
E-cigarettes have only been around for the last decade and its popularity has grown just within the last few years. Because of this short timeframe we still don’t know what the long-term health effects are with the use of e-cigarettes. There is a knowledge gap among our youth about the potential dangers that come along with vaping. E-Cigarette use amongst youth has been declared an epidemic and anxiety over the current pandemic is leading many people to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as smoking and vaping.
Because the coronavirus attacks the lungs, smokers and vapers may be more susceptible to contracting COVID-19 since it lowers the body’s defense when it comes to fighting off any potential infections. It is crucial that we educate our youth about the extra dangers that come along with vaping.
